Every LT is engineered with absolute focus. To be faster. Lighter. Nimbler. To provide undiluted feedback and encourage you to push. To the edge and even further. The new McLaren 600LT Spider takes this formidable mix and intensifies it – heightening every sensation. Vivid. Raw. Visceral… Unforgettable. At the press of a button, the ultra-light retractable hard top roof vanishes beneath its tonneau cover. And puts the driver even closer to the mind bending LT experience. At every compelling moment. Just like every McLaren that has earned the LT name before, the 600LT Spider is aggressively aerodynamic and obsessively light. In fact, its unique carbon fibre MonoCell II chassis is so light and strong that no extra stiffening was needed to maintain the incredible levels of performance and agility. From a family of rare, revered cars, here’s something rarer still. A Spider without compromise. That takes LT exhilaration and pushes it further. Welcome to the edge. Amplified.
All the focused, purposeful design cues are here. The aggressive fixed aerodynamic package. The elongated silhouette. The lowered stance and wider track. The ultra-lightweight alloy wheels – wrapped with bespoke, track-focused Pirelli P ZERO™ Trofeo R tyres. And the minimal Alcantara® trimmed interior. The retractable hard top changes the game. Bends the rules. This utterly focused hardcore McLaren adds a whole new dimension. At the touch of a button, the elements rush in and your senses are overwhelmed. And not only by sun and fresh air. Now you’re even closer to the heart of this extraordinary car: the 3.8 litre twin-turbocharged McLaren engine and its trademark top-exit exhaust system. It’s a noise that will stay with you. An experience that will never grow old.
The meticulously honed and sculpted profile of the 600LT Spider has been formed by a clear purpose. To increase aerodynamic efficiency and channel air for cooling. This is a true Longtail… with a rear that’s 47mm longer than the 570S. It’s made this way to increase downforce. Which transforms stability in fast corners. Menacing and purposeful. Each curve, edge and surface is shaped to perform. Lower the roof and you can savour the exhilaration of open top driving taken to new heights. But roof up or roof down… the 600LT Spider is always making maximum use of airflow. Come rain or shine. On road or track.
Built on the exceptional carbon MonoCell II monocoque ‘tub’, the 600LT is incredibly strong. But it is also light… extraordinarily light. In the pursuit of shaving weight off the car our engineers left no nut or bolt unturned. They found weight savings right across the car. From the wheels to the seats. And from the Lightweight Alcantara® used to cover many of the surfaces to the touchscreen infotainment system that removes the need for heavier switches. We even removed the carpets and door pockets. The result – put quite simply – is the lightest car in its class.
Like every LT, 600LT Spider is for driving. Pure and simple. At the edge and on the limit. The torrent of power created by its 600PS engine is immediately accessible. Grip the wheel. The quicker ratio electro-hydraulic steering and stiffer engine mounts respond instantly and give you masses of feedback. Advanced lightweight braking and suspension – as seen on the 720S ¬– communicate every nuance and change. And you can set the 600LT Spider up to suit an endless variety of roads or tracks. The Active Dynamics Panel lets you tailor engine and handling set-up. You – and your car – become one.
Of course the numbers make compelling reading. 600PS. 620Nm of torque. 0 – 62mph [100kph] in 2.9 seconds…But the powertrain in the 600LT Spider has a personality all of its own. Which means experience is everything. Start up the 3.8 litre twin-turbocharged V8 and you’ll hear and feel much more. That’s because the engine and transmission mounts are stiffer. On the move, changes such as a more efficient water pump and the removal of the air conditioning compressor contribute to mantis-like responses. So does the dual-clutch seven-speed gearbox, with its tantalising choice of Normal, Sport and Track modes. Giving a distinct voice to this staggering powertrain is a new LT icon with unique top-exit exhausts. That, once heard, will never be forgotten.
A McLaren only wears the ‘LT’ badge when it’s undergone a radical and uncompromising programme of change. It’s got a lot to live up to. Nothing escapes attention. That’s why the 600LT Spider is by far the lightest car in its class. And why it engages you so completely when you drive it. The target when creating the car was to save 90kg. The final result? 94.1kg. A figure that rises to 102.2kg with the optional Clubsport pack. Built around the immensely strong and light MonoCell II carbon fibre chassis and lightweight aluminium bodywork, the silhouette is 47mm longer. With good reason. This elongated tail generates an extra 100kg of downforce at 155mph (250kph).
Unique in its class, the carbon fibre MonoCell II ‘tub’ is the core of the 600LT Spider. Everything else is built around it. Hugely strong, rigid and light, it’s an ideal platform for creating an undiluted high performance car. We pioneered this technology in 1981 and have never stopped perfecting it. Weighing under 75kg, the MonoCell II liberates every last gram of performance. But it also allows for precise braking and telepathic handling. Its sheer strength means that the 600LT Spider needs no extra reinforcement to support the Retractable Hard Top. So, in short, the design retains the minimal purity of the 600LT Coupe.
There’s a range of race-ready technology to engage you. The Electronic Stability Control [ESC] system is key. With three settings: ‘ESC On’, ‘ESC Dynamic’ and ‘ESC Off’, the system gives you complete control over the level of vehicle intervention. This is driver-focused innovation at its best. Then there’s the brilliant Brake Steer. Pioneered in Formula 1™, but banned because it gave us too much of an advantage, it’s back. Retuned for the 600LT models. The system subtly brakes the inside rear wheel to enhance turn-in and reduce understeer. So you can get back on the throttle earlier.
